Rats are shy rodents who enter our homes to seek food, shelter and safety in our homes. Rats also damage electrical wires; pipe and ducts etc and thereby become dangerous for our homes. They urinate on food; carry germs and pathogens thus posing a risk to health and life. Getting rid of rats can be a cumbersome process but you have to execute it in order to keep your family safe from these health hazards.
Here are a few simple tips that will help you to eliminate these rodents for good:
- It is very important to figure out the type of rodent that visits your house. The most common ones are Norway rats, roof rats and house mice. Once this task is done it will be very easy for you to use the specific methods aimed at eliminating them.
- Once you have identified the type of rodent the next thing is to look out for the sources of infestation. Look out in every nook and corner of your home to find the signs of rats: urine marks, damaged wire, entry holes and feces. Now make a list of these sources on a piece of paper and keep noticing daily so that you are confirmed about these entry points. Block all the entry points using a rigid metal screen or any other hard material.
- A very important thing to know about is that rats can hog onto any kind of food material present in your place. Make sure that every food material (whether organic or not) is tightly packed and covered if it cannot be kept inside the refrigerator. Using a metal garbage (which has a tight fitting lid) can solve the purpose. Outside the house, make sure that the plant seeds and animal food is sealed in a tight container. Removing such rat friendly source can go a long way in removing the rats permanently from your place.
- After a hard core inspection of the rat activity, removal can be done either by trapping or baiting. It has been found that rats are generally shy of new objects and placing rat traps in new locations for a week or two will certainly increase the chances of trapping them. Snap traps work well for small rats and you can use bait like hot dogs and liver meats etc. The spring on these traps are very dangerous so make sure that you keep it out of children’s reach. A better alternative could be to use Trapper T Snap Traps and T Rex Traps. Try to place the bait above the ground such as fence rails, garages and trees etc.
- Lastly you can also use rodenticides or poisons to control rat population but this method should be used as the last resort. Using rat poisons can be dangerous for you as well your children and can cause the rat to die in walls and other places hard to reach. Besides even if the rats are killed once it might be possible that the new population gets immuned to the poison used.
All the above methods will definitely help you to get rid of these irritating and deadly animals from your place forever.
