Almost everywhere and every time we have to cope up with incessant traffic noise around our home, workplace and markets. It has been scientifically proved that high volume of noise is not only harmful to the ears put also poses an inherent risk to heart and mental health. Thus it is of utmost importance to keep yourself away from noise levels for a better and healthy life.

Here are a few simple ways in which you can avoid or deal with the traffic noises around your home, so that you can live calmly and soothingly.

  1. To start with, (if you are building a new home) try consulting with your architect or home planner regarding the use of building materials which can reduce noise levels. For example you may use thick materials like stone or brick veneer than plaster or fiber cement.
  2. You can also reduce the noise level inside your home by carefully choosing the roofing material. For example you can use dense and heavy concrete tiles than light-weight steel or metal tiles.
  3. Try keeping windows on the noisy side of the house as small as possible. Now many people wish to have larger windows so in this case you can try using double glazed windows. These windows not only help to reduce the sound level (to some extent) but also keep the house safer and warmer.
  4. You can also cover the windows using heavy drapery or curtains. Make sure that it covers the entire breadth of the window.
  5. Walls can also help to reduce the level of noise if built with solid materials and it has been observed that the higher a wall is built, the more effectively will it ward of local noises and sounds.
  6. A water fountain or pond having a decent waterfall can go a long way to reduce the level of noise, if done properly.
  7. You can also plan out ways to have a bird or local animal population but try consulting with an acoustical expert before taking such a step.
  8. It has been found out that carpets absorb noises to a great extent. So you can try using an area rug or carpet runners.
